The Ray Price Akea Drag Racing Team takes another win in the NHRA circuit at Bandimere Speedway in Denver, Colorado.
In the first qualifying run, rider Tommy Grimes got the number three spot with a run of 6.981 seconds at 209.07 MPH. The second qualifying run moved Grimes into the number one qualified spot with a low ET of 6.688 seconds at 210.21 MPH. With track altitude at 5000 feet, and its corrected altitude air density at 9000 feet, the lack of air was a challenge for tuning for each team.
Timers in the third round of qualifying malfunctioned, which resulted in an aborted run. On the fourth and final qualifying pass Grimes ran 6.759 seconds at 218.30 which wound up as the top speed of the race and the 6.688 from round two held up for number one qualifier.
The race came down to Sunday elimination with recurring equipment issues. First round elimination with a borrowed computer, but it malfunctioned and didn’t get any data. However, the timers worked, and locked Grimes in with a run of 6.805 seconds at 208.65 MPH for the win. Second round elimination used another borrowed computer, this time without timers on, and Grimes ran 7.557 seconds at 154.50 MPH, winning the round. Again, there was no data to aid the team in calibration for the final round. In the third round of eliminations, Grimes won the race with a run of 6.720 seconds at 212.59 MPH.
“Running at that altitude and that kind of air was a real challenge to find a combination that would get down the track. The team had never raced at Bandimere or had ever met the conditions of air that thin before,” Ray Price said. “I’m very proud that we as a team could find a combination to win . Even though we didn’t turn any stellar times, no one runs as quick and fast on the mountain as they do at lower altitudes.
This race was a prime example of racer helping racer. We had computer data retrieval problems and were able to borrow computers from two different teams. Dale Nilles loaned us his spare unit for one round and Rich Vreeland loaned us the one off his bike for the last two rounds. We left Bandimere feeling very fortunate, grateful and lucky to have gotten the win.
We had a great time. The whole facility is top notch, very beautiful. The Bandimere family and their whole crew are very proud of their track and work very hard to make everyone feel welcome and keep it very clean and well prepared for racing. I look forward to going back in the future.”
The next race for the Ray Price Akea Drag Racing Team will be at Cordova Dragway Park in Cordova, Illinois on June 21.
