The Ray Price Akea Express Drag Racing Team lost first round of eliminations after qualifying in the number three spot at their first National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Harley Davidson Drag Racing Series race of the season at Royal Purple Raceway in Houston, Texas during the weekend of March 1-3.
Rider Tommy Grimes hit 231.56 mph with a time of 6.675 seconds in the first run on Friday. This was the first run of the bike since its recent additions of revamped clutch parts and other assemblies. Grimes improved in Saturday’s first round, 6.541 seconds at 247.29 mph. The second round, scheduled to take place on Saturday, was canceled due to weather. The team placed as the number three qualifier for the day.
“The weather was very cold,” Ray Price, team owner, said. “We had potential for making a good pass, but the timers weren’t operating properly. Cold weather generates a lot of power, and we were looking forward to turning some good numbers under those conditions.”
The cold weather affected momentum, and the team lost first round eliminations on Sunday.
The next race scheduled for the team is April 12-13 at Virginia Motorsports Park in Petersburg, Virginia.
Ray Price, nicknamed “Father of the Funnybike,” began his drag racing career in 1967 and became one of the drag racers sponsored by Harley-Davidson for a number of years.
