The “Rock” as it is known in drag racing circles is the second home for the legend Ray Price. For many years Ray Price has torn up the Rockingham drag strip and brought excitement to his fans by rocketing down some of the most memorable passes at this quarter mile track.
The Ray Price Racing team came with the same tried-and-proven motor they ran at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park, Norwalk, OH, the previous weekend. The only changes the team made were to the tune up once they read the track condition.
During first round of qualifying the drag bike spun the tire forcing Grimes to shut the Akea Express down. The team headed back to the pits and changed the tune up and readied the drag bike for round two of qualifying. This time out the team ran a 6.332 ET at 222.07 MPH to give them the number one qualifying position. In round three of qualifying the drag bike crossed the centerline, which disqualified the pass.
During Sunday’s round one of eliminations the team got a big run but Grimes still went out and ran an impressive 6.261 ET at 219.40 MPH to the delight of the crowd. In round two, Grimes moved the team into the finals with a 6.328 ET at 226.35 MPH. Facing Randal Andreas in the finals both bikes launched hard from the start line, however, Andreas left with a quicker reaction time and captured the win. Even though both bikes ran identical 6.313 ET’s and 227.27 MPH’s Andreas’s was able to capture the win on a better reacion time.
“Interesting final”, commented Ray Price said after loosing in the finals.
Even though the outcome wasn't what the team wanted, they are excited about staying in their backyard for the next NHRA Mello Yellow Drag Racing Series event taking place on June 13–15 at Bristol Dragway.
