The Ray Price Akea Drag Racing Team has had a busy end-of-the-season series of races, bringing home lots of wins along with a new American Motorcycle Racing Association (AMRA) national record.
After winning in Seattle, the team went the following weekend to Woodburn Dragstrip, located in Woodburn, Oregon, August 24-25. Grimes procured the number one qualifier position, defeating Steve Ruggiero and Randal Andras, with a semi-final elapsed time of 6.420 at 219.51 mph. The big win in the final round was mainly due to reaction time, in which Grimes led by .025 seconds. The run was extremely close, but Grimes won by .0042 seconds, with a pass of 6.605 seconds at 210.18 MPH.
The team raced in Bristol, Tennessee the weekend of September 6-7 as part of the NHRA’s Top Fuel Harley series. Rider Tommy Grimes moved along to the final round of eliminations against Doug Horne. Horne came out ahead with a time of 6.277 seconds at 228.15 MPH against Grimes’ 8.231 seconds at 107.55 MPH, and having broken the motor at half track, Grimes took home the runner-up title.
The team then went to the 1/8 mile Farmington Dragway for a one day match race on September 28. Grimes went three rounds, the first of which running 4.268 seconds running at 189.732 MPH. He continued to drop time. Round two was a pass of 4.248 seconds at 190.329 MPH. The last round, Grimes ran 4.224 seconds at 189.114.
The 22nd annual Jim McClure All-Harley Nitro Nationals at Rockingham Dragway was one to go down in the books. Grimes and the team, who are a local favorite, were on point all weekend, beginning with the number one qualifying position, running 6.22 seconds at 227.96 MPH. In round one, Grimes stayed consistent with a pass of 6.242 at 219.86 MPH, defeating Tampa’s Ray Cason, moving him along to the semifinals. Grimes ran the fastest time thus far of the weekend at 6.198 seconds at 220.69 MPH against Randal Andras’ 6.35 run at 220.12 MPH. The final round placed Grimes against Mike Scott of Bling Bay, British Columbia, Canada. A close race, Grimes came out ahead setting a new national AMRA record for Top Fuel Harley with a run of 6.197 seconds at 220.4 MPH.
The Ray Price Akea Drag Racing Team’s final NHRA race of the season was October 31-November 3 at Nevada’s Las Vegas Motor Speedway. After qualifying number one, Grimes went a 6.165 at 224.88 MPH. In first round eliminations, the bike broke a part in the valve train, but Grimes’ opponent red lighted, so the Ray Price team won the round. They then replaced the motor and made it in time for the second round, without enough time to retune the new motor, so the tire spun and transmission broke. The opponent also spun a tire, and Grimes was able to beat him to the finish line. In the third round, they had a good run going, but not having time to be able to tune the motor, Grimes lost a cylinder halfway down the track and his opponent came out ahead right before the finish line. So, the Ray Price team finished number two in points in NHRA Drag Racing Series.
“I’m really proud of the team,” Ray Price said. “They ran really well. The team did a super job in changing the motors and transmission while still making each round. Tommy did a great job of riding the bike and was able to save the first two runs. The team overall was consistent and hardworking, and it showed through to have run as strong as we did throughout the season, win races, and finish number two overall.”
